Down-under instrumental dusty jazz funk and gritty rare grooves ensemble Kerbside Collection get their sizzling fourth album 'Round The Corner' (2022) reinterpreted and revisited with a wide spectrum of treatments - from straight up deep jazz house dance beats, indie downtempo, head nod hip hop, cut up B-boy funk turntablism, to deep dub reggae steamers.
Kicking things off is young keys/producer wiz Risperson (keys player from down under live boogie-house grooves group - First Beige) with a deep, dubby and bumpy house beats rework of the title track 'Round The Corner', complete with sonic wobbles and punchy synth bass funk for fans of Opolopo, Beatfanatic, Atjazz, Jimpster, Jazzanova, premiered on Ennio Styles' Stylin' radio show. Next up is local Australia OG, beat technician (& original Resin Dogs co-founder) Blunted Stylus teaming up with turntablist DJ Toby Gee for a lively NYC B-boy, cut-up Steinski style, rework of 'Cookin’ With 3 Burners' for lovers of The Wiseguys, Cut Chemist, DJNumark, Boca 45, Marc Hype, Krafty Kuts, Cut la Roc, Jungle Brothers and early Fatboy Slim, Chemical Brothers funky breakbeat samples territory.
Legendary German break and beats remixer Renegades Of Jazz delivers a midtempo jazzy breaker interpretation of 'Cairo Green' complete with acid wobbles and sci-fi, space-age sound effects. The same song gets an Afro- latin-cumbia treatment from the Sabrosa tropical crew, reminiscent of some classic rootsy NYC Hispanic, Latin house music from the likes of Louie Vega & Elements of Life, Joe Claussell, Blaze, Osunlade, Sacred Rhythm etc.
Mainstay on every Kerbside Collection Remixes album, local Brisbane DJ/MC/producer Two Dee turns in a dubby ’slow-dance’ chop-up of 'Curaidh' complete with samples, scratching and plenty of groove with a percussive, summery, latin changeup at the end. The album’s studio engineer and electronica artist Marly Lüske, turns in a lush, downtempo beats version of Glaze, with all analogue hardware production, synths and swimming pads for fans of Boards Of Canada, Bonobo, Luke Vibert, Tosca, and classic Warp, Ninja Tune territory. The collection’s drummer Paprika, cooks up a swinging, head nod, instrumental hip-hop beats rework of 'New Day, New Year' for fans of J-Dilla, Keifer, Marc Mac, Nicolay, DJ Mitsu, Nujabes, and Kan Sano vibes.
Closing out the package of remixes, is an array of ‘rub-a-dub’ treatments from Australia dub wiz Echo Dex (Kingfisha), beginning with a 1 shot ‘out the box’ dub (using same studio gear as Lee Scratch Perry’s Black Ark studios in Jamaica) for fans of classic King Tubby, Scientist, Gaudi and Pachyman; a deeper ‘in the box’ dub (created looking out over Stradbroke Island/ Quandamooka country), and a more dancefloor, jiggy, dancehall, ‘club’ VIP to finish, for fans of classic Prince Fatty, The Nextmen, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Roots Manuva with extra dub sirens, efx, sub bass and ‘whine-up-your-waist’ rim-shot action, sending you off into the horizon, with this sparkling array of remixes and reinterpretations of the band’s humble, down-home, dusty, jazzfunk soul sound.
